Backend Developer

About the team

We're an 18-person team and engineering is the core of what we do. You'd join a 6-person eng team building the infrastructure that powers real-time dispatch operations for fleets across North America.

What you'll do
  • Build and maintain the core dispatch API — load management, driver assignments, broker integrations, and real-time status pipelines

  • Own backend services that power Relay and Lens — the two AI agents handling broker calls, rate negotiation, and fleet monitoring

  • Design and scale data pipelines that process thousands of dispatch events, document verifications, and load updates per day

  • Integrate with external systems — DAT, TruckStop, QuickBooks, Twilio, and fleet telematics providers

  • Work closely with AI/ML engineers to serve model outputs reliably and fast into the dispatcher-facing UI

Who you are
  • 4–7 years of backend engineering experience, primarily with Python or Node.js in a production environment

  • Strong fundamentals in API design, distributed systems, and database architecture — you've built things that scale and stayed up under load

  • Experience working with real-time data systems — websockets, event queues, or streaming pipelines

  • Comfortable owning services end-to-end — design, build, deploy, monitor, and iterate without a handoff culture

  • Experience with PostgreSQL, Redis, and cloud infrastructure — AWS or GCP preferred

Pay & Benefits
  • $130,000 – $170,000 USD salary

  • 1%–2% equity, 4-year vest with 1-year cliff

  • Full health, dental, and vision — 100% of premiums covered

  • $2,000/year learning budget and $1,500 home office allowance

  • Twice-yearly team offsites and flexible hours

The interview proces
  • Step 1: Application review — we respond to every applicant within 48 hours.

  • Step 2: Intro call — 30 minutes — chat with our engineering lead about your background, what you've built, and how you work.

  • Technical interview — 60 minutes — a systems design conversation based on a real problem from our dispatch infrastructure.

  • Step 4: Paid take-home task — 3–4 hours, $150 — a focused backend problem pulled from something we actually built. We share the context upfront and pay regardless of outcome

  • Step 5: Final conversation + offer — meet one more team member, talk comp and stack, and if it's a yes you'll have an offer within 24 hours

Why join us

The backend problems at Haulix are genuinely interesting. You're not building another CRUD API — you're building the infrastructure that sits between AI agents making real-time decisions and dispatchers managing millions of dollars in freight. Latency matters. Reliability matters. Data integrity matters. The work is hard in the right ways.

You'll have real ownership here. No tickets handed down from a PM three layers above you. No six-month roadmap frozen in amber. You'll see a problem, propose a fix, build it, and watch it go live — usually within the same sprint.
